Search Engine Submission and Indexing

Please Note - You do not need to submit your website to the larger Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. To get indexed on these engines you simply need to have links on pages which are already indexed by these engines. Once they find updated links they will follow them and index your site.

Submitting your website to other search engines is unlikely to generate very much extra traffic. The vast majority of your search engine traffic will likely come from Google, with a smaller amount from Yahoo and Bing.

However, submitting your website to smaller search engines and directories is important as it can help to improve your link popularity or PageRank. This is a count of how important your website is. The more relevant, quality links you can get pointing to your website, the higher the importance of your web site on search engines. This will help to improve your PageRank and therefore rankings on the main search engines.

Before you submit your web site to search engines you should:-

  1. Ensure the website is complete. Search engines do not like web sites under construction or where there are link to pages which don't exist

  2. Ensure the website is fully optimised

  3. If this is not a new website check to see if you are already listed on the major search engines. You can do this by visiting them and entering your full URL (Domain Name i.e. www.yourname.co.uk) in the search box and clicking search. If you are listed you should be ranked at number 1. If so, enter your chosen search phrase and check the ranking.
There are a number of services on the web where you can check your rankings on a number of search engines at once. Try searching Google for check search engine ranking and test some out.

If you are not well ranked you may well need to look at your on page optimisation. However, if it is fully optimised then acquring links is the next step which we will explain later.

  4. Before making changes to your page, check your tracking system to make sure you are not receiving hits to this page using a different phrase, if you are and you change it then submit, you may well lose these visits!

  5. Once you are happy with the optimisation you can submit to as many search engines as you like.
    • Remember - Major search engines such as Google do not require submission. If your web site is linked to from a web site already in their index, they will find your web site in time.
    • Submission can be carried out manually by visiting the submission page of each individual engine.
    • You can also use software that automatically submits to many search engines, although some engines do not support automatic submission. WebCEO is a good program to use with a free option. However, you need to enter your e-mail address for submission and many use this to send marketing, junk and spam e-mails to you. You need to use a genuine e-mail address so you can verfiy some submissions.

Therefore, if you do not wish to increase the amount of spam you receive you should ensure you do not use your main e-mail address and can de-activate the one you do use or use one you do not access often. If you are not happy entering your e-mail address and submitting yourself we will be happy to perform one-off submissions for you. Please Contact Us with your requirements.

    • There are also many free online submission services which profess to submit to hundreds of search engines and directories automatically. Unfortunately, you should beware of these as many simply use it to obtain e-mail addresses for marketing purposes.

  6. Some services guarantee a top ranking for given key phrases in a set number of search engines. Again beware of these as there is absolutely no guarantee with the top free submission search engines.

  7. Other services offer, for a set monthly fee, to re-submit your web site over and over again.

Unless you make regular changes to the optimisation or content of a page, re-submission will not improve your ranking. If you wish to keep resubmitting try a different page each time. As mentioned, Google will find your site without submission and index other pages over time and any changes will be indexed on the next crawl so there is no need to keep re-submitting.

  8. If you want us to assess your site for search engine optimisation, make suggestions on alterations which should be made and check the ranking on search engines, please submit the form with your details, including your web site address.
